Our Happy Childhood

I have been extra-nostalgic lately. Maybe cold weather makes me love home more, or something. The other day I pulled down a huge box of old drawings and elementary schoolwork that our mother has saved over the years. I spent a long time looking through it all and I decided to post a few things up here, for the sake of Marie who is a bazillion miles away, and also because I want to show off the childhood of me and my sisters.

Here is something Marie did in about third grade. She is the linguistic and artistic prodigy of the family. Here is something that I drew circa 1990. My pictures were always of happy people and rainbows. The things that look like polka-dotted rocks are either dogs or spotted kittens. That very well-drawn bird is the work of my sister, who always had better fine motor skills than me.
Lucy was the most rambunctious of us, as shown in her preschool report card. Under "Response to discipline," her teacher wrote, "Lucy can ignore us for long periods of time."

I made a mistake in that owl picture. The owl's eyes wouldn't be looking to the side, instead its head should be turned.

My favorite part of that paper is the parenthetical clause. I was very self conscious any time I had to use the word "pray" or "God" or "church," but I tried to have a sense of humor about it. Still do.

I AM DYING, this is so funny. You have been the same people for all of your lives.

Rachael, you should put up some of your drawings! I don't remember what yours looked like... I remember Sarah always drew horses, though. She went through that 9-year-old equestrian phase.

Oh and BTW, there were also a couple of letters to Santa Claus from us girls and some Christmas wish lists. Marie, you were such a bossy little biatch to Santa. You itemized how many of each present you wanted, exactly which Dinotopia books you already had and which ones you wanted the most, and your letter left for Santa one year said, "Santa, The stockings are on the desk. -Marie." You were like, seven years old.

This is the 3rd time I've come back to look! The pieces you've chosen are such perfect portraits of each of you.
